M.I.T.S. Update
The Muncie Indiana Transit System has received eleven new low-floor buses in October and November 2005 to replace the older buses from 1981. The 1981 buses are the first buses that MITS purchased after the Muncie Public Transit Corporation was formed. The new buses come to Muncie with some fanfare and will be on display. The low-floor design allows wheelchair access without a mechanical lift. The wheelchair lifts can have mechanical failure, which affects accessibility on fixed route service.

MITS has switched its buses and vans fuel to bio-diesel. This cleaner burning fuel is developed from soybean oil and diesel. Ball State University has used the fuel in its transit buses for years. The use of this fuel should help in local clean air efforts.

MITS was awarded the 2005 American Public Transportation Association's (APTA) Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award. This award honors an APTA public transportation system that has demonstrated achievement in efficiency and effectiveness. MITS competed with North American transit systems providing between one and four million passenger trips annually and won. The award was based in part on numerous verifiable performance data.
